West Herts Society
Tannerswood sheltered house is a happy, welcoming home, which has been supported by local volunteers throughout its thirty-five years. There has been growth and development, but always in keeping with the family atmosphere of the house.
The society was formed in 1972 by a group of volunteers. They sought a property in Abbots Langley suitable for conversion to sheltered housing for older people. Eventually the committee bought Tannerswood in Greenways. In the autumn of 1973 building work began to provide eight bed-sitting rooms, and Tannerswood welcomed its first residents in February 1975. It has since been extended and is currently home for ten residents.
The house is run by two committees of volunteers: the Management Committee with eight members, which oversees the finances and maintenance of the house; and the House Committee with six members which, along with other volunteers, offers companionship and support to the residents.

Nestled in a quiet residential street in the historic and bustling village of Abbots Langley, famous as the birthplace of Nicholas Breakspear who went on to become Pope Adrian IV - the only Englishman to ever be Pope, Tannerswood, which is now an Abbeyfield supported house, was originally a large family home with ample grounds.
Situated in the heart of Abbots Langley, the house is well regarded and very important to the residents of the local community.
