Work has started on the site of a brand new Abbeyfield Extra Care Scheme in Plymouth.
The 80 Abbeyfield apartments scheme comes as part of the wider development of the city’s Millbay area and will address the need for affordable housing for the community’s older people.
Additionally, the development will create a number of new jobs for Plymouth’s economy.
Devised in partnership with Millbay’s lead developer, English Cities Fund (ECf), the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) and Plymouth City Council, the scheme will provide prospective residents with 24 hour on-site care, state-of-the-art facilities and a friendly, community-focused living environment.
Once completed, 10 apartment units will be put up for market sale with the remaining 70 available for affordable rent. In keeping with Abbeyfield’s charitable objectives, the major portion of this development, and all future developments, will be offered to residents at less than the market rate.
Sam Tabiner, Abbeyfield’s Head of Development for this project, said: “We are delighted to finally be underway with the work on this scheme. It is a privilege to be a part of the Millbay regeneration and we look forward to providing the area’s older community with the high quality of care associated with Abbeyfield.”
Ian Knight of the Homes and Communities Agency said: “This is an excellent project that Plymouth can be proud of achieving and it will provide much needed elderly care facilities within the heart of the Millbay regeneration area, helping to create a vibrant and balanced community.”
The provision a much-needed extra care facility at the heart of the Millbay regeneration is a key element in the Millbay masterplan alongside new homes, businesses, public spaces and the development of the area as a vibrant waterfront leisure destination linked to the city centre by a new Boulevard.
