Rodney’s twitter has a keen following

Resident of Cotmaton House, Dan Gallagher, has many friends at sheltered housing facility Cotmaton House, but recently he made a rather different sort of friend – a robin red-breast. 

Managed by the Abbeyfield Sidmouth Society and founded upon principles of friendship and companionship, Cotmaton House provides sheltered housing for up to 22 older people. The residents are well looked after while maintaining a sense of independence in later life. They are encouraged to socialise and join in with activities put on by the caring and professional team.

Resident Dan Gallagher feels at home in the house’s beautiful garden, which is also home to a robin red-breast, whom he has named Rodney. Daniel feels privileged to hold the title of chief bird watcher bestowed on him by the staff and his fellow residents, and occasionally Rodney will even come to Dan’s hand if he has some food for him.

“Rodney often chats to me, which I do enjoy.” Dan says. “Weather permitting I try to see him twice every day. Most of the staff and residents are very interested in his welfare and always ask about him.”

Times have been tough recently for the residents at Cotmaton House. However, Rodney has been a welcome new resident and, with spring just around the corner, perhaps he also plans to expand his family in the near future.
