Abbeyfield has been successful in receiving £264,944 to deliver a Big Lottery funded Accelerating Ideas project on ‘The impact of volunteering on older old living in residential care settings’.
The thirty month funded project will focus on residents within twenty Abbeyfield Houses across England and Wales. Starting in May 2016, the first year will pilot in 9 Abbeyfield houses in the Dorset and Somerset area, opening up to a further 11 Abbeyfield homes across England and Wales in 2017.
The aim of the project is to increase volunteering activity in those over the age of 75, working with the Institute of Volunteering Research to measure the impact that volunteering has relating to well-being and quality of life. Alongside this, we will be sharing good practice examples of the types of volunteering roles that the over 75 age range can, and want, to be involved in.
This comes as the latest data from the Cabinet Office shows that only 21 per cent of those 75 and over formally volunteer, a sharp decline from those under 75.
