Plan your retirement to ensure peace of mind in later life
Whether you've reached retirement age, or you're approaching your retirement, having a multi-step plan in place can really give you peace of mind. To enjoy a comfortable, secure, and fun retirement, you need a good idea of how you'll get there.
1. Calculate your finances and retirement spending needs
It’s important to know your current financial situation before heading into retirement. Put some time aside to plan, track and assess your finances (savings, pension, mortgages etc.) so you know where to start. Completing this task can also put your mind at rest as you will know exactly where you are financially, what you will need in order to live comfortably, your property budget and monthly expenses. Moving home can be a complex process, but we’re here to help with a handy guide on how to finance the care you need.
2. Decide what type of retirement living you need
There’s a range of services on offer for you to choose from, and many reasons to choose retirement living, so take some time out to determine your needs before choosing which option works best for you (it may also help you to discuss your potential needs with family and friends). If you’re very active and self-sufficient you might prefer an independent living complex or sheltered housing. These services offer communal hubs or shared housing so that you can socialise and connect with your neighbours. If you require a bit of extra support, it may be that you choose a residential care home, and for those with more complex needs, there is always the option of a dementia-care home or nursing home. Whatever your needs, there’s something for everybody — we even have pet-friendly homes.
3. Location, location, location
Think about where you would like to move, be it closer to family or not far from your current home. It's important for you to feel happy and comfortable in your new home. Being closer to family or friends brings some comfort, whilst others prefer similar surroundings with high streets they know like the bag of their hand just a stone's throw away! The world is your oyster, so take the time to consider your location before starting your search.
4. Take up a new hobby (or pick up where you left off with an old one)
Retirement = more time! So why not get stuck into all those things you’ve been meaning to do? Do what you love with your time, whether it's gardening, building, knitting, inventing... the list goes on, now you actually have time to do it. You could even take up a new course in something you've always wanted to do, but never had the time - find out more about lifelong learning. Our houses and homes also offer a range of activities for residents to enjoy if there is no one thing in particular. We hold quizzes, exercise classes, afternoon tea, plus sensory activities for those living with dementia. If you prefer your own company, you could try our staying-at-home activities resources.
5. Take your time
It's important that you take your time — do not stress and try to rush thing through, instead try to enjoy the process. Planning your retirement can be a rollercoaster of emotions, so plan at your own pace to ensure you are ready when the time comes. If you need to, it may help to seek support from family, friends, or support services. It can be difficult starting these conversations, so we’ve made a list of ideas about how to get started.
